Recent statistics indicate that there are only about 260,000 HVAC technicians in the workforce, and the number of needed jobs is over 80,000. In addition, we are losing new technicians at a rate of about 8% a year. The need for trained HVAC Service Techs is only growing as the labor shortage increases. Even in the winter months (Jan-Mar) which are typically the slowest, we have contractors putting in requests for techs weekly.
These loses are due to older technicians retiring but also because the younger generation is seeking jobs outside of the trades. The Steamfitters Union has worked to educate young people who are deciding on a career path about the opportunities available through the union, its benefits, earning potential, as well as the dynamic day to day work challenges.
It can take seven years to train a good service technician. The Steamfitters Technology Center has extensive tools, resources, and skilled instructors to train new members both through the apprenticeship and beyond. The video above talks a little bit about the technology center and how the union helps its members chart a solid career path throughout their life. Additionally, the union offers a sense of community, continual training, recognition, and competitive pay.
