The Steamfitters Technology Center is constantly being upgraded to keep up with the latest technological advancements in the industry. Trades workers and technicians come from all over the region to train at this state-of-the-art hub for education.
This year, the facility saw various updates, including the addition of a mezzanine, which created a second level for a new rooftop unit training lab. This lab contains equipment from various companies, such as Daikin, RUUD, and AAON, to give apprentices experience working with the diverse technologies they will encounter.

“One of our biggest advantages is that we have so much functional equipment to simulate real-world situations that apprentices will see once they’re in the field,” said Local 449 trainer Joe Mitsch.
Below the mezzanine, on the main floor, there are plans to build a high-pressure steam lab with a full-size 150 lb. boiler. In addition, the pipefitting lab is being expanded for further operational training. Having this technology in the labs allows apprentices to see the equipment in action, right after learning about it in the classroom.

The Steamfitters Technology Center also has plans to make additions to the hands-on workstations, of which there are currently 150, as well as adding brand-new refrigerants to the tunnage lab. These new additions will prepare apprentices for working in the field and allow seasoned steamfitters to return and stay up to date with industry changes.
“Once you get out of your apprenticeship, you don’t quit going to school. Whether it’s training or safety, or updates. There’s always changes,” said Mitsch. “Equipment’s coming out with new rules, regulations, and energy requirements. You have to stay current.”
