Local Apprentices Represented at the Pennsylvania Pipe Trades Competition

Steamfitters UA449 Apprentices Pennsylvania Competition once again highlighted the skill, discipline, and dedication of Pittsburghโ€™s next generation of tradespeople. Last month, Steamfitters Local 449 proudly sent three top apprentices to Scranton Local 535 to compete in the 2023 Pennsylvania Pipe Trades Apprentice Competition.

This multi-day event brought together elite apprentices from across the state. As a result, competitors had the opportunity to test their abilities, learn from peers, and demonstrate the high standards of union training.

Showcasing Skills Across Multiple Trades

During the competition, apprentices participated in five core skill areas. These disciplines represent the foundation of modern mechanical work:

  • Pipefitting

  • Plumbing

  • HVAC

  • Sprinklerfitting

  • Welding

Each event required precision, efficiency, and safety awareness. Moreover, industry professionals and veteran volunteers evaluated every task to ensure consistent standards statewide.

Pittsburgh Apprentices Rise to the Challenge

At the Steamfitters UA449 Apprentices Pennsylvania Competition, Jarodd Potts represented Local 449 in HVAC, Matthew Rill competed in pipefitting, and Ethan Minto showcased his welding skills. Notably, all three competitors were fifth-year apprentices.

Throughout the event, they faced strong competition from Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Latrobe, and Scranton. However, they remained focused and professional. As a result, each apprentice represented Pittsburgh Steamfitters with pride and confidence.

Most importantly, Jarodd Potts earned top HVAC honors. Because of this achievement, he secured a spot in the District 2 Regional Competition.

Learning, Mentorship, and Union Pride

Beyond the awards, the competition served a greater purpose. For example, apprentices gained valuable feedback from experienced journeymen. In addition, they built connections with peers from other locals.

These events also reinforce the importance of mentorship. Consequently, young tradespeople leave better prepared for real-world job sites.

Looking Ahead to the Regional Championship

This year, the District 2 Regional Championship will take place on home turf. Steamfitters Local 449 will welcome winning apprentices from seven surrounding states to Pittsburgh.

The event will run from June 6โ€“9. More details will be shared soon. Until then, Local 449 continues to invest in training excellence and workforce development.
