Last month, Steamfitters Local 449 sent three competitors to Scranton Local 535 to take part in the 2023 Pennsylvania Pipe Trade Apprentice Competition. The event spanned over two days and held competitions in five different skills:

  • Pipefitting
  • Plumbing
  • HVAC
  • Sprinklerfitting
  • Welding

This opportunity provided the top apprentices in the state an opportunity to showcase their skills. Industry professionals and veteran volunteers from around the state came together to share skills and wisdom with the next generation of journeymen.

Jarodd Potts represented local HVAC technicians, Matthew Rill for the pipefitters, and Ethan Minto competed for the welders. Each competitor is a fifth-year apprentice and battled with their contemporaries from Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Latrobe, and Scranton. All three apprentices did an excellent job of representing Pittsburgh Steamfitters at the state level.  Jarodd Potts earned the HVAC Technician State Title, which also secured him a spot in the District 2 regional competition.

The regional championship will be on home turf this year, as local 449 will welcome the winning apprentices from seven surrounding states to Pittsburgh.  The event will be from June 6-9, with more information to come.
